Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have been actively engaged in the debate about private military and private security service provision. Amongst some other issues, they have focused on regulation, accountability, and human rights, particularly in weak or failed states.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre. A leading independent resource on the subject. The site covers over 3000 companies, over 160 countries. It receives over 1.5 million hits per month. Campaign Against Arms Trade. CAAT was set up in 1974 by a number of peace and other organisations, which were concerned about the growth in arms exports following the Middle East war of 1973. Since then CAAT has helped to make the arms trade a significant political issue: http://www.caat.org.uk/

CARE. CARE is a non-governmental, non-sectarian, not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to helping the poor in developing regions and providing relief to victims of natural disasters and violent conflicts: http://www.care.ca/

Centre for Democracy and Development. Formally registered in 1997, CDD is a new, non-profit, non governmental, research, information and training institution dedicated to policy-oriented scholarship on questions of democratic development and peace-building in the West African sub-region: http://www.cdd.org.uk/

ICG is a private, multinational organisation committed to strengthening the capacity of the international community to anticipate, understand and act to prevent impending crises and conflicts. ICG's approach is grounded in field research. Global Policy Forum. A group of citizens from several countries founded GPF in December, 1993, to monitor global policy making at the United Nations.
